Details

In accordance with the winemaker’s philosophy, a wine production site should be in direct contact with the soil used to grow the grapes. The focus should be on craftsmanship, with no high demands placed on contemporary building technology. The walls, which are in contact with the earth, are permeable, the space is open to the sky, and the production makes use of gravity. The primary materials are as clearly discernible as the three grape varieties used to make the wine here; a triumvirate of stone, concrete and steel.

The Jury‘s Statement

In Goriška Brda, Slovenia, winegrower Kristian Keber commissioned Klaura | Horvath Lendarchitektur to build a modern interpretation of a vaulted cellar. The Klagenfurt-based planning office took particular account of the winemaker's philosophy, which focuses on a single wine produced according to ecological and biodynamic principles. Nestled underground in fragments of natural slate rock, the concrete structure takes the shape of a clover leaf, the trifolium, which indicates good growing conditions for viticulture. Daylight enters through an opening into the lower of two levels, which are connected by a spiral staircase and a gallery-like balcony. The planners have achieved a truly extraordinary contextual quality here.
