The Smart Circular Bridge in Ulm is a milestone in the development of new, high-performance materials that have small carbon footprints and promote a bio-based circular economy. The bridge also functions as a musical instrument. Its sound draws the attention of passers-by to the special nature of the structure. A web app takes the inquisitive on a journey to discover how dedicated teams develop such innovations for society – with the goal of arousing curiosity and fostering courage for the future.
The Jury‘s Statement
In Ulm, the Smart Circular Bridge is more than just a bridge made of sustainable materials. The project, which involved several innovation and research institutions, also features an immersive sound art installation. The concept and implementation were developed by Proesler Kommunikation from Tübingen. The team equipped the bridge with sensors that measure the vibrations triggered by the footsteps of passers-by and translate them into sounds. It is wonderful to see how much curiosity and interest in future-oriented topics such a relatively small project can generate. The designers have succeeded in transforming the mere transition from A to B into a communicative experience.
