Kafka Oasis was once a leftover space occupied by parked cars and disconnected from the neighbourhood. Through selective demolition, the blocked alley was reopened to create a shared courtyard. Existing structures were preserved as both framework and memory, and a community kitchen, bar, and greenhouse were placed beneath a climate-responsive canopy. Reused concrete and steel give discarded materials a new life within the renewed public space.
The Jury‘s Statement
Set amid a former district of government and research institutes, the Kafka Oasis urban regeneration project succeeded in breaking down old walls—both physical and mental—and instead opening up the space to the public. What’s more, a modern ecosystem has been cultivated here, within which flexible green spaces for social interaction, urban culture, and neighbourly exchange have emerged. The oasis, which is by no means intended to be seen as merely a park, breaks with the sense of alienation. Another important point is that this is not a prestige project by an architectural firm; rather, the initiator, Weshare, adopted an evolutionary, participatory approach. The aim was to take into account the everyday problems and wishes of local residents, workers, and other stakeholders in the design process.
