Details
The la pendenta suspension bridge stretches 270 m across the Rhine gorge near Disentis/Mustér, about 100 m above the Vorderrhein at the source of the Rhine, linking Sontga Gada and Mumpé Medel. Its parametrically optimised, material-efficient steel structure integrates an innovative cable net with a structural function. Lightly embedded in the landscape and history, the project combines engineering excellence, sustainability, and social value.
The Jury‘s Statement
Suspension bridges always hold a great fascination, yet taking that first step usually requires a great deal of courage. This is particularly true when the bridge is as delicately constructed as “La Pendenta.” As the longest bridge in the canton of Graubünden, it spans the deep gorge above the Vorderrhein, achieving maximum impact with minimal use of materials. The parametrically optimised supporting structure is the result of a highly innovative and extremely material-efficient steel construction. And although crossing the bridge must feel like floating, it offers exceptional stability thanks to minimal cable sag. Here, breathtaking dimensions meet a spectacular location and a picturesque setting within the Swiss landscape.
