Details

This project reinterprets a child and adolescent psychiatric clinic as a place of emotional safety. Inspired by the idea of a familiar home, the space provides a calm and warm environment for children and their families, with varied seating and open layouts supporting flexible use and gentle transitions. Beyond its medical function, the space fosters trust, stability, and a positive experience throughout the care process.

The Jury‘s Statement

Younger generations often talk about “safe spaces” in a private context these days. On a professional level, South Korea’s The Brain Psychiatry Clinic could hardly live up to this term any better. The facility has developed an innovative, anxiety-free spatial concept that shuns a typically sterile, almost clinical atmosphere in favour of a warm and soothing ambience. With great empathy, a minimalist, low-stimulus healing environment has been created. There are no long, monotonous corridors or garish children’s features to be found; instead, the architecture intervenes only subtly, while the lighting concept provides gentle, soothing diffusion without harsh shadows. Natural materials such as wood, combined with an organic design language, allay fears and offer a sense of protection. This project represents a groundbreaking design that clearly illustrates how neuroarchitecture and healthcare design can actively contribute to the destigmatisation of mental health conditions.
