Details
The modular system is based on a prefabricated room layout, with all modules delivered as finished parts. No cutting or drilling is required on site, as assembly is carried out exclusively with threaded rods and fittings. This enables quick assembly and disassembly. Local materials such as ash wood and Kunminger bricks are used. A dry assembly component serves as a prototype for adjustable shelves, tables and stools. The modules height-adjustable and can be used flexibly. No coatings or adhesives are needed. The elements are prefabricated at the factory and can be reused on site. A closed CO₂ cycle is supported, combining sustainability with Yunnan’s textures.
The Jury‘s Statement
Customised shop concepts do not necessarily have to be based on individually manufactured furniture. Studio D'Arkwave demonstrates this with a modular plug-in system used in a shop in the southern Chinese city of Kunming, which is designed for fast assembly and disassembly without drilling or cutting. Simple perforated bricks from a local factory, threaded rods and fastening nuts are used, along with shelves made from simple ash wood boards. This holistically conceived project is a fantastic example of how highly customised, flexibly variable and later reversible spaces – in this case retail interiors – can be designed using regionally available, untreated materials.
