Details
The Suprematist Bureau offers a way to rethink the ideology of the 20th-century Russian avant-garde, inspired by Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematist canvases. Its tectonic volume refers to the quest for pure architecture by the artist and his followers and to the creation of sculptural forms—architectons. The multitude of hidden transformational forms within the chest resonates with Malevich’s non-objective paintings: like this piece of furniture, they reveal themselves to every viewer from a new angle.
The Jury‘s Statement
Russian avant-garde art merges with state-of-the-art, invisible industrial mechanics to transform into a functional object. Although primarily a manufacturer of fittings, Hettich has pulled off a real coup with the Suprematist Bureau. What appears to be a sculpture is in fact a brilliantly designed piece of office furniture that takes on a new geometric form with almost fluid ease every time individual elements are turned, rotated, or opened. Finished on the outside with elegant walnut veneer, the bright red interior of some of the drawers evokes the revolutionary era of Russian art. This unprecedented furniture proto- type has successfully demonstrated that artistic forms, too, can effectively make their mark in spaces through the use of innovative fittings.
