Details
As part of the generational handover, Gysel 175 Winery has been reoriented towards wine production. The dilapidated grain barn has been replaced by a contemporary winery building, enabling on-site processing. This new building structures the value chain and enters into dialogue with the existing ensemble. Timber sourced within a 5-km radius defines construction and expression, and the building emphasises regionality and sufficiency in accordance with the Schaffhauser Haus label.
The Jury‘s Statement
How does one imagine a winery? Certainly, it is hard to picture one that is as contemporary and sustainable as the Gysel Winery in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, where a new complex has been created from a dilapidated, ageing grain barn using traditional timber construction methods. Around 80 per cent of the timber used was sourced from the neighbouring Südranden Forest, and thus the building establishes a close link with the region. Yet the old is allowed to remain: the historic structure, with its 12-m-high framework and striking vertical cladding, continues to define the building’s original character. Despite its modern, linear design, the new building blends harmoniously into the quaint townscape.
