Details
This project is a deliberate act against preservation as nostalgia. A historic school building is not frozen in time but transformed into a catalyst for social life. The design stages a clear dialogue between past and present: distinct yet connected, respectful yet forward-looking. Familiar typologies are abstracted into a precise contemporary form, and thus architecture becomes an active framework for community, identity, and sustainable future use.
The Jury‘s Statement
What is particularly pleasing to the eye at the Burgdamm Children’s and Family Centre in Bremen-Burglesum is how a bridge has been built between the old and the new, thereby rendering visible the passage of time. A historic village school dating from 1892 and a modern new building have been transformed into an exciting duet, in which both structures coexist harmoniously like a timeline brought to life, while at the same time standing as monuments in their own right. The approximately 1,000 sqm of space can accommodate up to four groups, and there is a kids’ restaurant and a parent-and-child café to delight young and old alike.
