Valckensteyn

Valckensteyn, Rotterdam’s first mass-timber residential building, provides 82 affordable rental homes in Pendrecht. The design reinterprets the staggered form of its postwar predecessor through an innovative 12-story timber structure. Organized on a 7.2-meter grid, it uses CLT elements to optimize material use and construction. Paired with deep west-facing balconies and a park-like garden, Valckensteyn shows that affordable housing does not need to compromise sustainability or quality of living.
