In a radical transformation of this “laundry district,” where clothes were once scrubbed, wrung out, and mangled, stylish residential units now stand. The listed factory site, with its brick buildings dating from 1900, has been transformed into a contemporary complex of 30 units that tastefully preserves its historic industrial charm. The entire development is further enlivened by the 1,400-sqm landscaped inner courtyard featuring old fruit trees, which has replaced the formerly unsightly workshop sheds. It is also lovely that certain details, such as cast-iron columns and historic entrance arches, have been preserved and, in some cases, restored. And, of course, the flats themselves, to achieve that authentic loft feel, feature warm solid wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, and exposed concrete.
