Interior Designers of the Year 2026: Studio Wok
Studio Wok: Materiality as a Design Principle
Studio Wok was founded in Milan in 2012 by Marcello Bondavalli, Nicola Brenna and Carlo Alberto Tagliabue. Their shared ambition is clear: to create spaces and places that enhance quality of life. To achieve this, the studio combines architecture, interior design and landscape design.
Studio Wok works across residential, retail, hospitality and architectural projects. Its approach is defined by a precise use of materials, light and atmosphere. At the same time, the studio responds to the specific qualities of each site and to the materials associated with its local context.
Farini Bakery in Milan
Farini Bakery, completed in 2024, is a distinctive example of this approach. Its monochrome design creates a calm, gallery-like atmosphere. Beige and brown tones form the backdrop for a strong material presence.
A counter made of stainless steel and cork bricks forms the centre of the space. Running lengthways through the interior, it connects function, material and spatial experience. The deliberately visible irregularities of the materials add a crafted and authentic quality to the interior.
Selected projects by Studio Wok:
- Country House in Chievo, Verona, 2018
- Cascina Otto, Cossano Belbo, 2021

Jury Statement
The jury recognises Studio Wok for its precise approach to materiality and its sensitive response to local context. Farini Bakery in particular demonstrates how a reduced colour palette can place textures, crafted details and the natural imperfections of materials at the centre of the design.
The studio’s approach is rooted in craftsmanship, both methodologically and in its design work. Landscape, light, atmosphere and regional materials all inform the design process. Projects such as PAN and WAO Kitchen also reveal Studio Wok’s ability to connect materials, urban context and hospitality.
Studio Wok has developed a distinctive position in contemporary architecture and interior design: restrained in its use of staging, precise in its execution and attentive to the qualities of each place.
